The Fire Grows By the time backup firefighting units arrived, the fire had spread to cover more than a mile of the North Portland Bluff, and across acres of vacant land along the river. The fire had come incredibly close to burning homes, such as the one attached to this burned greenhouse. We later learned that the fire command had considered sacrificing the first tier of homes during this stage of the fire, and moving the fire line back.
