Lookout Mountain Summit

As the Divide Trail climbs along the ridge, the main summit of Lookout Mountain comes into view. Here, lenticular clouds have formed over the peak, created where the sheer vertical mass of the mountain has compressed moving air enough to condense vapor into stationary clouds. The exposed cliffs along the south side of the summit ridge show the thin layers of lava that are typical of shield volcanoes like Lookout Mountain.
