Ghost
Trees
The
route now follows the Divide Trail along the summit ridge of
Lookout Mountain, passing through bleached forests of "ghost
trees", huge skeletons of alpine trees. Here, trees must
endure blasts of wind, snow and ice in winter, and blazing sun
in summer. Many of these trees were hundreds of years old when
they finally lost their battle to survive, yet the skeletons
can survive for a century or more in the rarified environment.
