False Hellebore

Rising above the fields of purple aster, buttercup and penstemon at High Prairie are tall False Hellebore. In July, they are covered with large, feathery blossoms. This August view shows seedheads developing in anticipation of the rapidly approaching snow season. The toxic roots of this plant were used medicinally by Native Americans.
