Cinder Slope

At the first sharp switchback in the old access road, the route enters a broad slope of red volcanic cinders that reveal Lookout Mountain's violent past. From this point, two routes climb to the summit. Following the old road, you can continue an easy grade through more forest to the summit ridge. Bearing right on an unmarked shortcut, you can connect to the newer High Prairie Trail, and this view of Mount Hood.
